Specs: Windows 7
alright. so i just found out that when I click on the network icon, my computer shows up and another computer shows up, but there are 3 computers accessed to the internet in the house and the 3rd one isn't showing up but my friend is using it. Is he able to view the files on my computer even if I don't see the computer he is using on the network?

Maybe. No lan or internet computer could be considered secure.

Learn and use as many best practices as you can to help avoid issues.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

The first thing you need to do is to turn off 'File and Print Sharing' if it is on.
The next thing is to turn off the computer or at least set it to Sleep whenever you walk away from your computer and use a secure password for logging in AND for waking from sleep. A computer that is a not on, cannot be accessed either directly or remotely.
Make sure 'Wake from Lan' is turned off in your BIOS.
Make sure 'allow remote desktop' access is turned off.
Just to start you off right.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

So, do you want to share your files with your friend? What is it you want to accomplish?
