in the bios you need to set the "boot" order to include booting from usb or removable media........assuming the external drive is usb. Some newer computers have an external sata connector but you do not say how it is attached?

also......while you're in the bios....see if the drive is detected there.........until you have an operating system installed it will continue to say "no boot device". You need to boot to a cd/dvd and install the operating system on the "currently blank" new external drive. Why would you not buy the proper drive for the sake of easier portability and keep an external to back up your files???

Note that Microsoft does not support installing any version of Windows to an external drive. You would really be better of obtaining a suitable internal drive.

the best thing you can do is to buy an internal HDD, remove the old one, replace with the new one and keep the external as a backup.and storage.
you will require either a copy of win 7/vista/xp or free linux to install on the new HDD.
you may be able to get a cheap restore dvd set from the manufacturer acer with all the drivers and original OS.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
