What type of computer is this? Can we have more specifications? When was it last working? You can try tapping the F11 key key at bootup to launch the recovery manager if it has a recovery partition. Programs/files you had before the crash are most likely gone.

I would do a factory restore. Instructions can be found HERE. Scroll dowen to where it says "Recovery from the startup screen (during system boot)" then follow the instructions.

It's odd that your OS would just disappear. Maybe theres been physical hard drive damage. Not sure. Anyway try the link I gave you and see if you can get it running again.
