Windows 7 has built in backup utilities. Go to Control Panel> Backup & Restore. Easiest method is to use an External hard drive to backup to.

You can perform a manual backup when you want to or set a schedule.

Does the Backup/Restore in Win 7 Control Panel backs up the OS also. I know it backs up files and folders.

✔ Best Answer
You'll need an external hard drive and some software which can create a
hard disk image

This image is not a picture, it's a copy of an entire hard drive and boot code, saved as a large file.

The software is actually built in to Windows 7:

Control Panel > Backup & Restore > "Create a system image"

You will also need to "Create a system repair disc" from which you can boot your PC so that the backup image can be accessed for recovery.

You can backup whatever you want to. You choose.

As Phil mentioned above, you should also make the repair disk.
