Anyone else getting a random ping when FireFox is open?

June 3, 2012 at 16:52:10
Specs: Windows 7
Is any one getting a ping sound from Firefox? The only way I can prevent it is either close Firefox or mute all sound. It sounds like a sonar ping and can be very annoying. I've searched about:config but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you asked Firefox? Try here: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home

I have tried, getting thru is sometimes pretty hard on their site, I'll just keep looking for an answer I guess, I'm almost to the point of giving up on Firefox, the sound is very annoying and muting is not the answer. This problem coupled with their updates not being compatible with Norton's toolbar is making it hard to justify using Firefox.

Thanks for the reply,

Are you sure it's Firefox, not a Windows sound event?

Try looking in the Control Panel, Sounds

Can't say I'm getting any sound from Firefox, and there's not enough information to guess at the sound.

It may be from windows, but it only happens when Firefox is open, I have been unable to duplicate/find the sound inside windows sound configuration and options. It a seemingly randoms sound exactly like a ships/subs sonar ping. No other error type indications at the time of the sound.

Shoot maybe my computer is just haunted, lol

System is:
HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
8 GB Ram
64-bit Operating System
Beats Sound System
Two 1 TB Hard Drives
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 with current updates

I'm going to try disabling my Firefox addons one a time to see if it may be an update for one of those, I'll post what I find.

Thanks again for your help!

Other avenues to check:
1) Windows sounds. (Namely Start Navigation, but there could be others.)
2) Any sort of anti-virus or firewall installed. Sometimes they like to "remind" you that they're "working."

Update on addons,

I disabled all Firefox addons one at a time until all were disabled and then rebooted just to make sure. The sound still occurs only when Firefox is open. I'm running Firefox 12 because version 13 is not compatible with Norton's Toolbar.

I've switched to using IE just to see if my virus protection was the culprit and even tried every windows sound I could find but none of them sounded like this sonar ping.

At this point I'm thinking of going back to a previous version of Firefox. I love this program but can not abide that annoying ping, lol

Wait, 13? I thought 12 was the latest official release.
You're not on one of the developer/beta channels, are you?

Do you have any sort of instant messanger program or chat relay client like MIRC running? Or are you logged on to a chat website in Firefox? I seem to remember a few of those will give you a pinging sound when someone posts a message.

Razor2.3, you hit the nail on the head, apparently ver 12 was a beta, I upgraded to 13 after finding out that it was now compatible with Norton's toolbar and everything is great,

Thanks everyone for your help, sorry I didn't catch that earlier, but I guess when I received an email about the beta I just upgraded to it without thinking.

I appreciate everyone's time and help!

Ok, I know everyone has probably given up on this one, lol it did look like it was fixed.

Nothing changed and no new installs. But with Firefox 13, today the sonar ping is back. Not as bad as it was, but if is definitely back.

Bring up the Sound Mixer, and mute Mozilla Firefox. The pinging now stops, correct?

That stopped it. No sound at all from Firefox now for everything, i.e YouTube, lol Does kinda point to a Firefox issue tho?

Problem is still not resolved, but I appreciate everyone's help.

Thanks again,

It confirms the sound is coming from Firefox, and not something else, if that's what you mean.

Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with all of the methods one can use to get Firefox to play sounds, so I'm just going to link to the instructions on using Firefox's safe mode.
