I am using Windows 7 Home Premium as my OS. I was opening a photo and when asked what program to use, I selected windows media player. Now all my desktop icons and start up files show that they are .LNK and none of the .exe run. When I click on an icon or start up menu item, it goes to media player and says it cannot perform the function. In order to even use my laptop, I had to create a new user. Older posts show a zip file that is Lnkfix_vista and is supposed to work on Vista or Windows 7. I downloaded the file and when I try to execute it and extract, it only opens a notepad. Please help--my PC is 5 months old and dummy me did not make a restore point! But I do have a very recent back up of whole PC on a Click Free Backup drive. Is there an easy way tp get my old icons back and have my start up items work too? Or do I have to restore all files to the newly created user and then delete the old user? Please provide info in step-by-step instructions. Thanks so very much!! Fran
FrancieMR, Try the LNK and EXE File Association Fixes at the link below. I'd try the LNK fix first. Post back as to the results. File Association Fixes for Windows 7

I did as you instructed. When I extract the zipped file, all I get is a notepad with the program written on it. Same for both lnk and exe. When I tried to do right click and selected merge, nothing happened on either.
Any further suggestion is appreciated. Although I have a;lready established a new user and am migrating files to it. If this new user action is the "fix", what happens when I delete the original user?
Thanks for any help, Fran
