Solved all icons on desktop have the extension .lnk

November 5, 2011 at 16:24:00
Specs: Windows 7x64,S.P.1, i3,370m@2.4Ghz/8mbRAM
Removed Western Digital Smartware from computer. When rebooted, all shortcut icons changed to image of Windows WordPad.lnk. When clicking icon, only change is a WordPad page, with (what I call) random characters. (note- to a computer-literate person, these random characters may have a meaning. I am not comp-literate). Program associated with icon does not open. Have no access to any program except Windows "start" icon,Recycle bin, Control Panel icon. Windows "start" icon opens, but all listed programs display WordPad icon, all open to WordPad page, display random characters as above. Tried System Restore. Unfortunately, all backups on Western Digital HDD, now not accessible. Boy am I stupid. Tried Winhelponline.com....fix does not work.Tried SevenForums fix..also does not work. Am lost and ready to call in the Marines. Can anyone suggest anything? With much Thanks, drbob.

Try this fix for LNK associations from Doug Knox's page ...

http://dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/li...

Then you may also have to run the EXE associtaion fix ...

Johnw: Thanks for reply. Tried the four sol'ns. Negative. I believe problem is deep in registry.Went to Default Programs>Associate a file type>Set associations. Changed .lnk from WordPad to other programs. Net effect- opens in that program, but not in the "real" program. Frustrating. Perhaps I should take my unit to a professional. Confused.

Krystyna: Thank you for reply. Tried first reference, got blank screen. Second reference, Code 404, URL not found. I tried Default Programs>Associate a file type> Set Associations. Negative. Ready to take comp to a professional to straighten out.

Sorry, I have no idea why the download links didn't work !
But you can find the two zip files (LNK and EXE association fix) listed on this page
