When you install VLC, don't set file type associations. Since you already done it, go into another program that you plan to use like Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc. and within that program's options, set the file type associations.

Another way to associate a file type with a specific program is to right-click, go to Open With > choose program, select the right program from either the Recommended list, Other list, or Browse for the right program, then place that check-mark to "Always use selected program to open this kind of file." You'll have to do this with each file type.

Sometimes, the icon for the previous program will persist even after a new program is associated with that file type. I encountered the same thing with the Opera web browser and HTML documents a while back. If that's the case, open up a Windows Explorer window (like My Computer), go into Tools > Folder Options > File types tab, then search for each individual file extension you want to adjust.

After selecting an extension, click the Advanced button, click Change Icon, select the program with the icon you want, then select the icon from the available options. Some programs only have one icon while others have many.

Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. I don't check this site daily, but you're welcome to PM me as a reminder.
