The system image file should have been on the old hard drive but was missing, indicating that the hard drive was probably faulty and needed replacing.

When you fitted a new hard drive, it's completely empty so it doesn't have a system image file on it anyway.

To install Windows on to your new hard drive you have to use the Factory Recovery Discs which you should have created when the laptop was first purchased, using the Advent Backup Recovery Wizard in Windows.

If you didn't create any recovery discs it's obviously too late to create them now , but you can purchase a Recovery DVD from SPC Spares Limited for a payment of £25. The ordering page for the Advent Roma 1001 is here: http://www.adventrecoverymedia.com/...

You may have to create an account with them to order the DVD. Save the page URL in your bookmarks so you can easily return to it, then click "Register".

Another way is to download the matching version of what you had, W7 ISO & use your product key.

thanks. I have created a recovery disc and thats the source of the problem - the recovery disct doesnt have the system image file on it. I have tried the repair dsc on a perfectly working similar model with a new hard drive and that doesnt work either
