The model number of your computer is not given - has it has an @ key? Does this problem only occur with particular programs?
If it comes up with the wrong character then it might be due to USA -v- UK settings, either global, or for your keyboard or whatever program you are using.

Press "Shift" and the number 2. The @ appears above the 2 on the upper row of numbers.
Aha Ewen - now you've made me think. I'm from the UK so I guess that is one of the differences with a US keyboard.
Mine has the @ key above the apostrophe (middle row to left of Enter key).
