Which model Acer Aspire do you have?

When the system starts to boot up... do you see anything on the screen - in particular a few words stating what to press to enter setup?

What happened prior to the current state - which has left the top key inoperative?

We obviously would need the model number to give you focussed help but here's some general Acer Aspire stuff:

I assume you have backed up all your own programs and data,

Most likely the top keys not working is a hardware fault so factory restore is unlikely to help. I doubt that symptom is due to a virus either but if you suspect one for other reasons, then that could be pursued if you wish.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

If it's shutting down, it could be due to overheating. When's the last time you cleaned any dust from the cooling vents? Also, if you think you have a virus, why wouldn't you just do a scan instead of reinstalling Windows & risk losing all your files & programs? The best way to run a scan is from outside of Windows by using a rescue disk. Just create the disk, boot off it, allow it to download the latest anti-virus .dat files, then run a full scan.

If you insist on doing a factory reset, simply restart your notebook & immediately press & hold down Alt + F10

And be very aware that any form of factory restore/rest routine will invariably delete "all" your personal files during the process.

So if you haven't copied everything you wouldn't like to lose to external storage... do so before any form of factory restore/rest routine.

If you need help of saving those "precious files..." post back as pholks here can/will advise more fully.

Sadly so many do not have their files copied off the system to external storage (ideally on a regular basis) prior to any factory restore/rest routine - and thus lose them al...

Once your computer turned on, press and hold Alt key, then continuous press F10 button until you see Acer eRecovery System. From there you can reset your computer to factory settings. http://www.top-password.com/blog/re...
