A large MSO cache has appeared

Specs: Windows 7/XP Dual Boot, P4/3.1 3gig
I use two systems Win7 and XP in disk caddies. I do this because there are some programmes that W7 will not run. Neither do they run successfully in VirtualBox and so I use the appropriate caddy.

On this occasion I was using W7 and about to try a new programme. I am in the habit now of backing up the system with Macrium before I attempt new stuff.

I ran the new programme (Fences) successfully and spent most of the afternoon using Photoshop CS3. At the end of the day I had occassion to open "My Computer" and I was horrified to see that the entire C:\ drive was one great big red line.

The drive is 160gig which translates to 149gig in round figures and my system occupies 25gig. I used "Ace Utilities" to establish that the vandal taking up the space was one called "MSO Cache" and it occupied the entire drive balance leaving 2gig free. I searched the drive high and low but I was unable to locate it.

I opted to restore my image and I re-installed the new programme and it has been working properly. I also used CS3 with no further problems.

Yesterday I was creating a large Help file with Word and I was using "Snagit" to illustrate the steps. Each window I copied I saved to the clipboard so that it would be instantly available to Word and I wonder now whether that could have been the culprit. If so what would have caused it and how can I avoid it happening again?

Regards

MSOCache (written as one word, not separate) is created during MS Office installation but its size should be around 180-190 MB. Less than 1/5 GB. This is a hidden folder. Therefore, please check for virus activity. Above all, do you have MS Office installed ?

Regards

EDIT: This folder is about 320 MB for Office 2007 in Win 7 x64. The above figure 180 MB is for Office 2003 in Win XP x32.

Thank you suatcini. I do have Office 2007 installed and I must say that this has never occurred before. I have had it installed since I first installed it in Vista.

I enabled viewing hidden folders and the file is in fact in C:\ and in my Win 7 the size is 527mb. I was not able to find it earlier because I had split the file name.

Can you suggest why it might have altered in size so radically?

Regards.

Could be due to version of MS Office 2007, i.e. Professional Edition, Standard Edition, Home Office and Student Edition. Mine is Home Office.

If you want to change location of this folder, please see:

Thank you suatcini... I have bookmarked that link for future reference but now that I know where the file is located I'll have no difficulty in finding it again.

Your help is much appreciated
