Windows 3.1/3.11 not loading

November 18, 2017 at 23:27:10
Specs: Windows 3.1
I'm trying to run windows 3.1 in ms dos 6.22, but when i do it shows the splash screen for a second or two, then it brings me straight back to the command line. I have tried reinstalling, using 3.11 instead of 3.1, and installing on CD vs floppy. Anything helps.

See if this helps:

Not surprisingly there isn't much help available online for Windows 3.xx these days, and it's 20 years since I last used that dinosaur OS.

"...when i do it shows the splash screen for a second or two, then it brings me straight back to the command line."

First thing I would suspect is an incorrect video setting. Assuming you've installed Win3.1 to the hard-drive and have a VGA Monitor, start with something basic, such as the "generic" 640x480x16 colors:

If that works, then make sure you have the correct drivers for which ever video card/chipset you have (you didn't mention that specifically).

Thanks for the reposes, but nothing worked.

I think i was to vague in the hardware realm. so here is a list of specs on the computer.

Processor: AMD Sempron 3000+
RAM: 1 gig of DDR ram
Graphics: On board graphics
No extra cards other than a serial card

MS DOS 6.22 is installed on a 2 gig Flash Drive
The flash drive is a SanDisk U3 Cruzer

I'm starting to think that my computer is to modern for 3.1. but if you could point me in the right direction that would be nice. Thanks.

EDIT: Now i'm getting some error when I run win (Windows 3.1 not 3.11). I'm getting this error: "EMM386 Exception error #06 - press enter to reboot." any help with this error or is it unrelated.

Ya think?

On something like that, you need to be running it virtually, MSDOS doesn't see more than 64MB of RAM and Win3x has problems with more than 256MB of RAM without serious tweaking.

Here's how to set it up under DOSBox (forget running anything that old off of flash):

Another thing was I tried was to use the usb in my 256 mb and pentium 4 machine but same error. I may need to test it again but at the moment I don't think it works.

EDIT: Im also trying to boot Windows 95 and I almost got it running fine under flash, the only problem it shows is to much ram.

EDIT2: I have installed Windows 3.1 before in virtual machines, so I know how it works, and that's why I'm trying it on accual hardware instead of a VM. Also I may order like 2x 256 mb ram sticks (two because if win 3.1 still dosen't boot, I will use the 512 mb for win 95)
