Solved Is there a CD data writing program which works under 3.1 ?

August 17, 2014 at 04:33:28
Specs: Windows 3.1
I still have a 486DXII66 running windows 3.1. I recently got a second hand CD writer to replace my CD drive from a computer market. I am looking for the software which can burn data CD with the CD writer.
Any advice will be highly appreciated.

It's unlikely there's anything out there unless it was something made for SCSI CD-burners (which were just about the only burners available during Windows 3.1). Packet-writing/CD-burning didn't really take off until the late days of Win95. There shouldn't be any reason you can't use the drive as a CD-reader however....

Hi Davis:

Yes there is software that will burn CDs with Windows 3.1. I still have a working windows 3.11 computer; but you cannot burn to normal CD-ROM drives, TRA is right, CD Burners from those days only worked for SCSI drives (I use an external Plextor SCSI CD Burner with Windows 3.1 to do that). You can use an old version of Nero to burn CDs in Windows 3.1. I use Nero; but older versions such as (on will also run under windows 3.1. Getting an installation CD-Key might be tricky; but if you get a physical disk of an old Nero program of ebay or in a thrift shop that CD-Key will be included. Good luck.

When I was configuring that Windows 3.11 machine I spent a lot of time looking for CD-Burning programs...but nothing worked on windows 3.1, windows 95 was the bare minimum. So your options are very limited here, Nero was the only software I ever found that would work in Windows 3.1.

There are additional versions available from the I-Shou University FTP in Taiwan:

Nero from May 1999 is the latest for Windows 3.1.

Keep in mind you'll need Win32s for the later versions of Nero on Windows 3.1.

The latest version of Win32s (February 19, 1996) is available on the Microsoft FTP:
