Solved How can I get back into win 3.1?

December 18, 2017 at 12:21:14
Specs: Windows 3.1, 80386
Please help !!!! I’m a novice at legacy IT, but stupidly I tried to load MagnaRam and now I can’t start windows. I’m told “System initialization file required to run Windows in 386 enhanced mode incomplete.” Then below that it says, “you need to run the setup program again.” Please ! I do not want to lose all my Win 3.1 work ! Is there something I need to do in my config.sys to get it out of enhanced mode ?? Remember, I’m a novice.

Are you certain it has anything to do with CONFIG.SYS?

What happens when you jump to the windows directory (CD C:\WINDOWS) and type in "WIN" (without the quotes)?

And FWIW, you would have likely done just as well by using MEMMAKER (if you're using MSDOS6 or above).

Thanks. I get the same message. I’m trying to keep from having to reload windows and loose all my data.

It's been a LONG time since I messed with Win3.1 but based on the error message, the problem is with system.ini in the 386enh section of the file. See if this helps: https://jeffpar.github.io/kbarchive...
