whats the difference between

select a ca from a list detected in your environment
specify author certification authority

i know the first is a self signed cert. i choose this for my lab but what does that mean for mobile users and external users

That means, that the certificate can not be verified by a public certificate authority.
Therefore, the users, connecting to your server via encrypted connection like https, secure webdav, pop3s, imaps an so on, will get a message saying, that the Certificate can not be verified.
The users are asked, whether they trust this this server connection and they need to accept the untrusted certificate, which is always a bad idea, cause it might be a face site or domain and will want to grep username and passwords of the users.
