two domains on the the same physical network

Specs: sbs2008
I have an existing server2003 running on my network as domain controller, DHCP, DNS, file server, in fact everything but mail exchange. I also have a new server running SBS2008. I plan to eventually run this machine as mail exchange,DHCP and domain controller demoting the server 2003 machine to file server only. I have created a new domain name and want to run the SBS on the network to set it up and exercise it until I am sure it is fine to connect clients to the new domail and mail exchange. Can I run the two domains on the same network without SBS2008 interfering with the server2003 operation ? If so what are the considerations or steps to follow. The server 2003 runs ok but I'm told its rather cobbled together over many years from two old server 2000 systems, long before my time here. Clean SBS2008 is a better way to go as we currently have no local mail exchange on the old server. Will SBS2008 permit this ?

forest and domain names can't be the same. Ideally you would have the new sbs on its own ip subnet so the two will never communicate.
