how can i install server while the home network still there

Specs: Windows 7
i am confident that i can install windows server 2008. i had windows server but currently i am using home network . want to upgrade it to client server environment. how can i make that happen by having backup that if it does not work i can roll back to same internment. i have shared drive on windows server 2008 and i have users and passwords associated with how we log in into the system now.
a help will be much appreciated. i want to learn the things and help will be much appreciated.

Make sure that you have set all the machines with the local administrator password. That way you won't have any trouble, if you want to return to a workgroup environment.
