Do I need CALS???

April 28, 2011 at 02:51:25
Specs: WIndows Server 2008, 3.0GHZ/8GIG
I am setting up a domain controller on a Server 2008 machine. It is a new machine replacing and old 2003 machine which was used as a file server. Do I need CALS to set up clients on the domain? I want to use the new machine as a file server for now until we move on to a database type file system but for now I want to set up active directory to increase my control over the XP clients local security settings but didn't know if I still had to purchase the CALS. Thanks

Yes, you need CALs but the ones that you (presumably) already have for your 2003 server should suffice. Server software comes with 5 CALs (I believe), but above that you need to purchase more. Also consider whether you want to set up your licensing on a per user or per device basis. Have a look at this page for more details.

Correction: you must buy 2008 cals. 2003 cals are not transferable to 2008.
