Dear All,

I have a home server and I have 4 PC’s connected to it and 2 laptops. I of course run active directory on it Current config is IIS + Active Directory + DHCP I got a new better performing server machine and I want to configure it as the new active directory I tried the ntutility which runs under dos and I transferred everything as written the Microsoft KB. And the users / settings / dns migrated to the new server and I did the Active Directory Catalog machine thing and waited for them to both sync around 2 hours or more everything was automatically migrated. But whenever I dc the old server and try to log in via new server it does not allow! And on the 2nd created server when I try to change its name to the 1st old server it does not allow giving me reason that it can’t find the domain! I thought it’s a DNS issue so I went and tried to modify the DNS manually and it all messed up so now I just finished re-formatting the new 2nd server but still I have no clue what to do? I would appreciate it if someone could at least give me an article which helps I tried googling and they all refer to the migration tool but one issue in the way is that I want to keep all the settings exactly as they are now only migrate!

I even want to name the new server as the old server name once all migration is complete. The migration tool DOES NOT help because the new server has 8GB of ram and it’s a 64bit windows server 2003!

PLEASE HELP! Much appreciated

Regards,
AJ

Install 2003
In tcp/ip properties point it to your present server for dns
dcpromo it to be a dc
install dns server as secondary or AD intergrated
install apps
transfer data
transfer the FSMO roles
dcpromo down the original 2003 server and take it off the network.
Rename your DC
Check the dns server settings to make sure the servers host entry is correct.
You're done.

what do you mean "does not work"? That is general not specific.

Hi,

Okay I've done all steps above and made sure everything was migrated.

I also changed the IP address of DC2(new) to become like DC1(old)

but still when I disconnect DC1 and try to log in to DC2 to access active directory it does not allow me. It gives error message that it can't find active directory. While on the other hand when I plug back the DC1 to the network DC2 functions normally!

I made sure all steps you gave me were performed by the letter with no errors what so ever. I even migrated DNS and DHCP.

I've also renamed DC1 to "OLDSERVER" but when I try to rename DC2 to "SERVER" it does not allow me and gives me error "The following error occurred attempting to rename the computer to"SERVER": The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted."

please help! I'm stuck

Regards,
AJ
