Reset lost administrator password?

December 17, 2010 at 12:50:11
Specs: SBS 2003
The local admin password for our Windows 2003 SBS Server is no longer working. Apparently somebody changed it without documenting it, we really don't know what happened, but we can no longer log in.

I know it's possible to reset the password by using a boot disc, but is there any way we can reset it without taking the server offline? Some sort of autorun batch on a usb drive or something? I would really like to get this fixed without taking the server down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to reset the password with another user who has Admin rights other wise you will have to hack the computer which is something we can't tell you how to do. There is a program called JacktheRiper that will do it if your password is less than 8 characters and is all lowercase but most admins use strong passwords like ours would take a cracking program a couple years to crack.

I don't know why you can't take the server down. You should be able to schedule an outage during a holiday or some time when every one is off. What would you do if the server failed? Do you not have sort of disaster recovery plan?

I hope you fired the person who reset the password with out approval and did not store it in the safe.
