Specs: Windows 2003
Hi all

Our company has a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition which now becomes unstable sometimes. So we would like to reinstall it.

This server is the only server in our company. It serves as DC, DNS server, file server & print server. It contains the AD and file data shared with the clients computers.

I want to know if the following steps are okay:
1. Backup the System State
2. Downgrade from DC to member server
3. Quit the domain
4. Reinstall the Windows
5. Upgrade to DC
6. Restore the AD from backup
7. Install other softwares

Please comment. Thank you very much.

If you have a spare PC, in your position I would practice the rebuild on that, in its own separate network, to see what problems there may be and fully document the process. If you can rebuild the system that way on another computer you could then use it as the server for a little while whilst you rebuild the real one. That way you don't have the pressure of working to a deadline.
