Need help on install DNS on Windows Server 2003

May 4, 2012 at 05:37:49
Specs: Windows Server 2003
Hi...
My server currently still running Windows 2003 standard edition, currently with SP2 installed on it.
But since 7 years ago (first time installation), until today, the server hasn't been installed and configured for Active Directory and DNS. Because we are in a SME, and the server acts only as a single stand alone server.
Now, when I want to transform it to mailserver, I need to install the AD and DNS. But unfortunately, my installation CD has gone.
The AD I've installed successfully, but I fail on the DNS, coz it needs "dnspref.h" from the original CD, which our company has missplaced it alrd.

Anybody can help on this ? Where to find such file ?
possible to re-download the installation file (windows 2003 std edition) from microsoft ?
I've tried so many times, I can only find the Windows 2003 R2 update, but inside don't have the file I look for.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Willy

If you can't get another Windows 2003 server disk, and you should be able to, try googling for that file. Something like "download dnsperf.h"

Thanks Curt for your reply...
But, I really can't find it on google.I've tried also this method before I ask here.
I've tried with :
"download dnsperf.h"
"dnsperf.h file"
"dnsperf.h"
"i need dnsperf.h"
etc....

but, all return me almost the same result ==> dnsperf.dll.
and some result links to "Vulnerable security issues, dnsperf.h is not applicable"

Any other solution ?

Thanks,
Regards,
Willy

There's only one other solution I can think of, get another copy of the install disk and copy the file from there. This time, store that disk somewhere safe so it doesn't get lost again.

It's been a while since I played around with it but you should be able to just enable DNS and then configure it.

I will point out, the times I've tried to configure DNS before running DCPROMO, I ended up wiping the config and starting over and letting windows/AD setup DNS during the promotion process. So if you're planning on running an AD Windows domain, I'd recommend letting Windows setup DNS during the promtion.
