Specs: Win 7
hi,

i have installed win2k3 and need DNS and AD installed so that the end users will be able to access quickbooks, files and databases concurrently. I have worked with AD, but never have setup DNS.

I have somewhat of an idea how DNS works but need the following knowledge:

SETUP
- how to go about using the FQDN
- how to communicate to the internet for access
- forward lookup zone
- reverse lookup zone

Just follow the steps the dns wizard gives you. Once compete all you need to do is put the isps dns server ips in the forwarders [not to be confused with forward lookup zone]. The dns setting in the servers dns entries should be to itself 127.0.0.1 or its static ip address.

okay...but for the FQDN, do i use the websites domain or do i create a xyzcompany.local? Thats were I am getting little confused on. Also, the 127.0.0.1 is for the IPv4 right and for the ISP's dns I put in the forwarders once the hosts files are created?

Please let me know if I understood correctly?

You don't use a hosts file if you are using dns. Usually you create a .local domain name.

If you are wanted to host a web page there is more involved.
