Hi,

We're looking at running an online radio station and are looking at having our own server to stream shows. Can you tell me what we need in order to have our own server? Is it software or hardware? We already have a spare pc that's quite powerful. What else do we need? Any help or advice really appreciated.

A PC is not a server. It could be turned into one I suppose but I would recommend buying an actual server be it a rack mount type or a standalone type.

You will want to protect your data and have redundancy. This means at the very least, a tape backup device be included in the server and it should have the drives in a RAID also.

My best advice to you would be that you call some local computer consultant or a computer stores (NOT electronic stores that sell TV's and home theatres and cameras as well as computers but a store that specializes in computers and nothing else!) and get some quotes on server's and probably an ongoing support contract.

This is the type of situation where you'll want a reputable consultant or computer company to help you decide on what to buy and also to help you get the server setup and working properly. And by working properly I mean all software installed and working and the backups setup and working.

This isn't likely to be cheap considering, but you do not appear to have the know-how to do it yourself and this would be the best way to go for you if I'm correct in my assessment of your computer skills.

Thanks for your advice. I'll see if we can find a local pc specialist who can help put a sever together.
