DHCP issues after unplanned power outage

Microsoft Sbs small business server 2000...
March 2, 2010 at 08:29:29
Specs: Windows 2003
After an expected power outage, our SBS
2003 is having DHCP issues upon reboot -
local machines can ping the server, but the
server cannot access internet (thus, machines
on the network cannot access internet). We
have tried: rebooting, validating DHCP server
and lots of other things that are not working
(including an idea we read elesewhere that
disabling the ipnat.sys in the domain controller
may help, but it did not.)

We run a ethernet cable directly from modem
to the server. If we plug cable directly to
another PC, they CAN access the internet, so
it's not a modem problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You've narrowed it down to the server'. Apparently something has changed on the external NIC of your server and you need to fix that. It could be that the outage caused something in the TCP/IP stack to become corrupt. Does your server still communicate on the LAN with the client computers correctly?

If you don't mind an observation, you would do well to buy a SOHO Router and put it between your external connection and your LAN. Your setup would look as follows:

Internet >> Router >> Switch >> Server and Clients

Hi, thanks for the comments. Yesterday the server was at least
communication with other PCs on the LAN. Today, that is not
the case and we can't hit the server locally either.

If you're theory is true on the corrupt TCP/IP stack, do you think
there is any risk/harm in running the NetShell utility to see if
rewriting TCP/IP keys will work?

You should be able to do a system restore to a point before the crash.

You should be able to do a system state backup restore

Please post an ipconfig /all from the server so we can review the configuration.

Your server has two nics. Both are set to dhcp which invalidates it being a dhcp server. You have to have a static ip on the lan side for it to be a dhcp server.

I am going to guess the netgear nic is facing the router/modem. It's not getting a gateway entry so no internet

The other nic is getting an autoassigned ip since it could not find a dhcp server.

Start by running chkdsk /r on the disks to confirm you have no disk corruption.

Correct your ip configuration. [router should provide gateway ip and lan should be a static ip not in the servers dhcp scope]
Review your RRAS setup
Review your DNS server setup
Review your dhcp server setup
Reconcile your event viewer log errors

I am guessing you have no restore points or backup that includes system state?

Thanks very much for the reply. I am not sure if we inadvertently changed the dhcp setting on the LAN side while
trying to solve the problem...but you are right and we are
working on it this AM, but I don't think that is the root problem
that will solve this issue.

Apparently we backup the data nightly but just the data and
he hasn't been doing a full system back-up. so no, we have
no restore points currently (but I can promise you we will
going forward after this mess is resolved:)

Thank you.
