DFS namespace description

Specs: Windows 2003
Hi,

We have a DFS implementation on Server 2003 R2 with one namespace and multiple namespace servers. I understand the DFS namespace value at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComputerDescriptions

gets populated by the server the client gets refered to on first connection and this does not change. We have different computer descriptions for each of the namespace servers. What we would like is a DFS namespace description to be the same across all clients. We can change the descritpion on all namespace servers, and then update this registry setting, but this solution is not desirable.

In DFS Management if you select the properties of the namespace there is a description field - can this not be configured to apply to all mapped drives to the DFS namespace? If not we think this would be a good feature. Is there any other setting I am missing here?

Thanks

Gary.

Why the description? I am not sure what it is you need. If it is so that the drives map using the same name space then you can create a Root under the Distributed File System. We called our GlobalFiles. Then under the root you can place your Namespece Links. This will make the namespaces available at the domain level so you can reference them like...

\\MYDOMAIN\GLOBALFILES\SHARE

instead of

\\MYSERVER\SHARE

I am not sure this is what you are looking for but this is how we set ours up. Maybe I am totally off base on what it is you are trying to do.
