Configuration on VPN

Specs: Server 2003, 4 GB
Dear All,

I am new to this VPN configurations. We have a Static IP with us(A leased line connection too). We have a hardware firewall(PFsense) and server 2003 OS.

I had gone through fortinet or Cisco and hope it is more secure for VPN.

What are the things i required and where i need to start this process

What are the steps I need to carry on for VPN. If i configure in my firewall for VPN and how can I connect it with Fortinet VPN client.

i am confised pls guide me. I am not getting a clear picture.

You have to decide how you are going to configure you VPN.

First, is it going to be a Site to Site VPN or a Client to Site VPN.

Second, are you going to use Preshared Keys or Certificates.

Thirds, what protocol are you going to use IPsec, PPTP, L2TP or what?

Fourth, if you are going to use Client to Site you need to decide on the client software. You router may already have a proprietary client software. Which ever you decide make sure it is compatible with the protocol you decide on.

That is it in a nut shell. There is more when you get it setup because you may need to setup routing tables in your router so you can map drives through the VPN, also the DNS may not work dynamically through the VPN so you may need to tweak it too.

If this is the frst time you have messed with VPN then I recommend you get a book on VPN. It could take weeks for us to cover al of the details behind it.
