Clients Cannot Connect to the internet and ci

Specs: Windows XP
Hello,
I am in charge of administration of my organisation's pc's. On my server installed is Microsoft windows server 2003, on which was installed the DNS server. The internet connections to other clients on the network was working perfectly not until recently, we could not receive emails again, only the server can surf internet, other clients on the network has no access to internet. I checked the Event Viewer of the Server, but ForestDNSZone and DomainDNSZone could not be loaded, so i removed the dns from the role and re-added it to the role. But I did not do anything to the zone. The ForestDNSZone and DomainDNSZOne started working and the Server could connect to the internet, but up till now clients still can't connect to the internet and the clients can't receive emails. The server can ping some clients on the network but no client can ping the Server. I have done everything possible to make sure I rectify this problem. Still I've not been able to unravel my mystery. Can someone help me out there please. Thank you.

correct setup is as follows;

workstations point to the server for dns
in the server dns forwarders [not to be confused with forward lookup zone] you add the isp dns servers.
server points to itself for dns

way this works is as follows;

workstation makes a local name resolution request. MS dns server looks at its records and returns the info to the workstation
workstation makes a internet name resolution request. MS dns server looks at its records and doesn't see a entry. It then send the request to the isp dns servers based on what is listed in forwarders. The request is answered and finally returned to the workstation.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

Wanderer, Thank you very much for the reply, I will go to work tomorrow and I will try to implement this, the way I configured the DNS Server role is such that it should not forward to the ISP Ip address, because i do not want to open the network to the outside world, but I think I might have to try that tomorrow, I will get back to you as soon as possible tomorrow. Thank you.

Wanderer, Thank you for the reply, I have tried to use forwarder, but since the DNS Zones have been implemented before, the computer was telling me that the zone is already exist. can you give me a tutorial or something that I can read about how to configure zones and DNS in general, the DomainDNSZone, ForestDNSZones and so on so that I can do the configuration. after assigning the DNS role. Please I really need help concerning this problem. Thank you very much for your time.
