can't add two or more w2k3 licensing servers

July 25, 2012 at 06:33:17
Specs: Windows 2003 R2
I have 4 servers. Each server is a Terminal Server and has licensing mode enabled.

server3 - this servers contains the CAL's that are issued to all the other servers
server0 - connects to server3 for licensing
server1 - connects to server3 for licensing
server2 - connects to server3 for licensing

I need to bring down server3. But this will cause server0,1,2 to stop receiving licenses.

How do I make e.g. server0 another licensing server? I have more CAL's. I can't figure how to add another server to the terminal server licensing.

Thanks

I may be overthinking this question, correct me if I wasn't. Are you asking how to install the TS licensing service? It's pretty simple, you go to add/remove programs, add/remove windows components, select terminal server licensing, click next and finish. Once you do that, you can install the CAL's that you have on the new licensing server. After the licenses are installed, on each of your terminal servers, open terminal server configuration and add the new server to the lists of known licensing servers.

Hi,
No, im not asking how to install TS licensing service as I've done that already. Each server has TS licensing service installed.

What I'm asking is how can I make my TS license server fault tolerant, in case my TS licensing server goes down or planned downtime?

Thanks

Usually you would bring up the license server on a cluster if you wanted failover.

If you want to move the license server this should cover it.

I think the last sentence of my previous post is what you're looking for. You go into TS configuration under Administrative tools and specify the different license servers. Using the additional CAL's that you have, or moving them using the instructions in Wanderer's link, you should have your second licensing server ready to go.
