Adding additional drive to server with RAID

May 5, 2011 at 05:14:10
Specs: Server 2003
I have a dell poweredge with two 450 GB drives that are configured with RAID (i don't know much about RAID, someone else configured this server). There are 8 hot-swap drive bays on this server, and bays 0 and 1 are occupied with the two duplicating drives.

My question is this, can i add a third hot-swap drive to one of the other bays and just have that much additional storage space? I don't need the additional drive to be RAID configured, just need additional space. If i pop this additional drive in, with that mess up my existing RAID configuration? Will the computer try to also use that drive to duplicate as well? or will i simply gain an additional drive on my server that I can use for storage?

Thanks so much for your help.

Yes you can add a single drive to just add space to your server.

Though consider getting two drives and mirroring them [raid1] so you have drive fault tolerance.
