review the difference between peer to peer and client server.

for example home versions can do peer to peer with server 2000 but cant' join a 2000 server domain.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

"what operating system can be run on client machine"

nigosawa I gave you the answer to your question.

"for example home versions can do peer to peer with server 2000 but cant' join a 2000 server domain."

answer these specific questions and you have your answers;

what workstation OS can connect to 2000/2003 in a peer to peer setting?
what workstation OS can connect to 2000/2003 in a client server setting?

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.
