Windows 2000 server backup failing

March 17, 2011 at 06:42:40
Specs: Windows 2000 Server
I inherited a Windows 2000 server. They use the backup program that came with windows 2000. Thursdays tape broke about 3 months ago. Every way that I have tried to replace it has failed. I have done lots of research and can not figure out what is wrong.

Here is the current error of the week

Backup Status The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found.

Here is the script:

C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Thursday - 2.bks" /n "Thursday - 2" /d "Thursday - 2" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "Thursday - 2.job" /l:s /g "3a8d2b31-7d1d-496f-b06a-67dadd0a6794"

Heres the verification of guidname: Thursday - 2 3A8D2B317D1D496FB06A67DADD0A6794

I can also send any screen shots that you may need. Any help would be appreciated

This is an issue when you make your backups with labels. The labelled tapes are called a "managed" backup set by MS.

I've found it a whole lot easier to go without the labels and do an "unamanaged" backup set.

Then the backup doesn't care what tape is in the drive, it just performs the backup. This means, in the case of a long weekend for example, you don't miss a backup. However, your Friday night backup would be overwritten by the Monday night backup, but in my books, that was always fine by me.

The following hard to find document explains how to properly setup backups in Windows. It shows both methods, but as I said, I preferred to go with an "unmanaged" backup.

Thank you for this great info! I would like to keep it managed. But there are some awesome notes about managed as well. If in two weeks I can't get the managed work... were switching over to unmanaged, baby!!
