Why do you need a BIOS update to run Windows 2000?

"intel Houston motherboard GA 6WMM7"

The GA should be a dead giveaway. It's a Gigabyte board. Did it come out of a Packard Bell? If it did, do NOT use the Gigabyte BIOS.

Thanks very much. Its still in a Packard Bell. But it will only boot with win millennium, so I thought it must be an outdated bios. You think maybe its not, and
it should boot do you?
I ran a security camera from an old 487 that run win 2000 and the software that packed up. I was given this Packard Bell I thought would do the job but Millennium doesn't run the software, so I thought it should run win 2000. But it will not boot 2000, there is nothing wrong with the HD because I have tried it in another 486 and it boots.
You say don't use gigabyte bios so I need to look on http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/mb/p... do I.
\Thanks

Yes, Packard Bell have Gigabyte Manufacture the mainboards for them with a Custom BIOS implementation.............

If you feel a BIOS upgrade is required then go to Packard Bell Support Website to download.

ftp://ftp.download.packardbell.com/DESKTOP/

If it runs ME it should run W2K, you need to boot from the W2K CD.....

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

Are you sure your Win2K disc is bootable? Are you sure the boot order is configured correctly in the BIOS? If your disk isn't bootable, you'll have to create a set of boot floppies, boot off them, then start the installation manually.

Been to all these no joy. looking in the past Starcraftmaster was after details on this motherboard in 2008. one of his replys was from Jam dec 13 2008.
I found it. Your board is known as the HOUSTON. The last BIOS available is version 3.0Y

but this website shows nothing of interest to me. And I can find no ref to it, PB are no help.
So if it may not be the bios or I can't get the update, any other idea's why I can boot win mellieum but not win 2000 anyone

hello again. No I am not sure but as I said it boots millennium, on rechecking I note the millennium is a fat 32 disk. The win 2000 is NTCS. Now my other machine a 486 of similar age running win2000, will boot from this hard drive. So the disk is OK That is why I wonder about the bios.

Thanks but I no longer have the CD. I have noted last week that the millennium disk that does boot is FA32 whereas the win 2000 is NTCS. As that disk drives boots OK on a similar aged 486 I suspected the bios on this machine. But I need to find an update site to eliminate that cause. I am not sure if I can change the NTCS formate to FAT32 or not. Without spoiling that drive.
Any more I can do now please.
