Sound Card half works

Specs: Windows 2000 SP4, 1GHz Athlon 4/320MB
(Disregard the computer, it wouldn't accept Compaq Presario 1200Z, and reverted to an older one)
I'm trying to fix up an old Presario 1200Z (or 1201Z).

Its got what seems to be a SoundMax Integrated Digital sound card. I went to Compaq's site and grabbed some "ADI" drivers for 2000. And amazingly it worked. But then I started going for a few other things to help (Office, Firefox, ect). I had been trying to get the Synaptec touchpad drivers up, as the touchpad chip contained a -/+ button, which I guessed was for volume. So, during startup after installing the touchpad drivers, I swapped over to an alternate account, which while being a power user, asked for an administrator to install new hardware. So I went back to administrator, and notice that my sound is gone. The speaker is in the bar, and all looks well on the Device Manager...but I get no sound.

I've updated the drivers twice, and reinstalled the driver package twice, but I get no response. And I NEED the sound...not necessarily the headphone port, but at least the internal speaks.

Any help?

Just a bit too reto

Have you checked the volume level and whether the sound is switched to mute?

Yes, all volumes are at reasonable levels, nothing is muted.
