Slow boot and WinMgmt could not open the repository file

August 22, 2013 at 17:09:04
Specs: Windows 2000, P4 2.4mhz 2GB ram
My Win2000 sp4 computer takes 2 mins+ to reach the login screen. Checking ntbtlog.txt shows all the files loading but no loading times. The Event Viewer shows two items that repeat regularly, first the Error then the Warning. The most recent Error and Warning was right at the time when I booted up.

1.Error: WinMgmt could not open the repository file. This could be due to insufficient
security access to the "<%SystemRoot%>\System32\WBEM\Repository",
insufficient disk space or insufficient memory.

2. Warning: WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001

Could these have anything to do with the long bootup time. BTW, I have plenty of RAM, and my C drive has 2.5 GB free space. My pagefile is on another partition with 2GB free space.

Could someone comment on this issue...Thanks, John

I just took a closer look at the ntbtlog.txt file and compared it to one from another computer that boots in 39 secs (to login). The first one had aprox 5800 lines, the quicker one had 257 lines. I copied both into a spreadsheet and in the longer one I searched for a couple of the file names...and found each one (and it's line) repeated 55 times !!!

This must be the problem, but how in the heck did it get this way. And what can I do to correct this.

You cited some storage numbers that by themselves are not much help. If you have a large hard drive and only have a small percentage of the space left you can have issues with that.

Also best to let Windows manage the swap file.

Post your hard drive partitions, capacities and free space.

The 250gb hard drive my OS is on has 5 partitions with 2.5gb to 8gb free space, and 74gb of unused unpartitioned space. I don't have any problem using Windows 2000 even when my C drive free space gets down to 100 mb or less. I don't know anything about the repository file so I don't know how the issue of free space affects it.

But wouldn't you think my slow bootup problem is related to the gigantic number of attempts to load files, as evidenced by the 5800+ lines in ntbtlog.txt .

After checking ntbtlog.txt I've come to realize that it's so large because it's appending each boot list, instead of overwriting itself. So it keeps getting larger and larger, and I now don't think that's the cause of the slow boot.

But is the inability to open the repository file related to the slow boot, or is it something else that isn't affecting anything as far as I can tell. So far I haven't figured that out.
