Problem computer startup in windows 2000

March 20, 2011 at 11:58:49
Specs: Windows 2000
Recently I had a friend playing around on my windows 2000 trying to find a new internet browser that was compatable with my computer so I wasn't using an outdated one. However when they downloaded it onto my computer they forgot to erase the old version of IE and now the computer has to much on it to load anything other then desktop background, and not the icons.

-There is no message saying there is not enough memory.
-Also I tried loading it in safe mode, but the moniter has problems and will not show the screen as safe mode loads.
-Trying to click ctrl+alt+delete does not do anything

On normal boot, when you only get a blank screen, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start the task manager.
In task manager, click File / New Task (run) and type in explorer.exe.
Then click ok.

Report back the result.

well I tried running it in normal mode, and logged in to a smaller account without administration on the hopes that it would load more becuase of less information being loaded. To my surprise I did get all the desktop loaded and managed to open up my computer and see that c is not overfilled and still has about 1/4 of its space left. So I am thinking it is probably a virus. However I had to answer a phone call before I could do any more exploring and when i got back it wouldn't let me do anything. When I tried clicking on a folder everything (but the mouse) froze and my only option was to shut down. After trying to load it again I only got a blue screen with a white cutout of where the log in box used to be.

I did pull up taskmanager as it was loading however I only could see the processes page, with no tool bar or other tabs. There was no tab labling it as the process bar either, but just the box with Image name, user name, and mem usage, and an end process button.

In taskmanager you get no menu entries like File | Options | View | Shut Down | Help ???

I guess, you are indeed dealing with a virus.
Therefore I suggest to download a standalone antivirus cd, which is used, to start your system with and scan the whole system without running windows.

Read this on howto scan your system offline:

@sdfox
Firefox itself isn't the thing. What Firefox makes a so great internet browser, are the many, many real good extensions, e.g. NoScript and things like that.
