If the image was created off a different computer the installation will most likely fail. In my experience with Win2000 even adding on new piece of hardware caused a restore to fail when applied to the SAME hardware.

You need to install fresh.

What kind of laptop doesn't have a CD drive?

Get a CD/DVD drive. How long do you think you'll survive without one? And why do you need Win2000 if you have XP?
