Having trouble with PDF files

January 24, 2011 at 14:21:54
Specs: Windows XP
I am running Windows XP service pak3 (yeah pretty old) with Modzilla as my browser, When I try and open a PDF file it locks/freezes my computer. I removed all Adobe and re-installed now I get as far as downloading the file before it locks/freezes my computer up with a white screen, I then have to re-start my computer to because it won't let me do anything else, any help would be appreciated.

This is the Windows 2000 forum.

If you uninstalled Adobe, how do you plan on opening the PDF files?

You could try an alternate pdf viewer and see if they will open them. Foxit Reader is pretty much developed, Sumatra is somewhat sparse and there are others as well:

Did you install the newest version of Adobe Reader, "X"?

There is a little known issue that Adobe does not state on their website. I was only able to figure it out by trial and error.

Adobe Reader X will install on a computer running Windows 2000, however...

You are required to have Windows Installer 3.1 installed on your computer, otherwise Reader will throw up an error message during or after the install.

Download the third file titled "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe":
