Everything Wiped Out?

Microsoft Windows 2000 professional comp...

Specs: Windows 2000
Don't know if this has ever happened to anyone before but I really got hit today. I was zapped by something, that's for sure. I'm on Windows 2000 ( I have XP and Windows 2007) but the computer this happened on runs Windows 2000. Everything was fine yesterday..today, none of the shortcuts work on my desktop, the little flashlight box pops open saying it can't find shortcut. It seemed to affect all the icons on my desktop. B Recorder Gold, Adobe, Firefox, Canon, etc. I actually uninstalled of of them. But then when I went to Start, All Programs, to find WORD, the same thing happened...searching and saying no access to path and that I had to put in a disk (actually was saying I had to put in a disk for almost everything.). But when I go into C:/My Documents, all the WORD folders and files are there, but when I click on one, that little flashlight comes up...in otherwords, nothing will open. And when I ran my virus (WinClam) which I downloaded from net because it's the only one that supported Windows 2000, it didn't do anything, so I think that's affected also? Do you think I got hit with a massive virus? I can't believe that nothing, works, I've lost all my files. Weird thing is I have an external hard drive "G" and when I click on a file in there, same thing - flashlight comes up looking for file. Never saw anything ever like this. All my dog's records are on there. I can't believe this. I guess I must have gotten a virus that just wiped me out? I actually had to download Firefox again and it just barely lets me in (does some funky stuff first.) Strange thing is if you actually go into C: and find the program/s - everything is there, all the folders, all the files, but if you click on one of them...the little flashlight comes up looking for the file and saying it can't be found or there is no path to it.

There are other anti-virus choices. "WinClam" (actually it's ClamWin) doesn't run "real time" protection, it has to be run manually. That means that the nasties can easily jump on your machine without your knowledge & you won't know until the system acts up or you decide to run a scan. AntiVir Personal & Avast! Free edition still support Win2K.

Did you try rebooting? How about booting into safe mode?

I'll try Avast, thanks if I can find the free version...I find that most of the times these versions are not free, hopefully this one is. Didn't know that about ClamWin, thanks. I did reboot, and everything is the same. I have two printers here and just tried right-clicking on a file to send to printer...but box pops up saying to put in a disk....so printers affected too *sigh* what a mess. Thing is even if I get a new computer, these are older HP printers and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't work with a new computer. What a mess, sickening. Thanks so much for your help.

P.S. Do I have to uninstall ClamWin before I install Avast? Thanks.

Yep, thanks. I'm going to download it, just wanted to know if I have to uninstall ClamWin first before I install Avast? I'm assuming I do?

Well, I tried to download Avast and it said that it can't install to Windows 2000, Service Pack 4. So now there's no anti-virus on my computer at all. Think I'll just have to go and buy a new computer and hope this doesn't happen again.
