Error installing SP4 in Win2k

February 12, 2009 at 20:55:10
Specs: Windows 2000
I am reformatting my Windows 2000 system, and SP1 installs just fine, but when I go to the next step and install SP4, it installs, asks me to reboot, and when the system does, it loads windows, and goes into a perpetual rebooting mode. Trying to boot in safe mode doesn't do anything (it still reboots when Windows loads). I can't think of anything more specific, and am not sure where to go from here. Has anyone else encountered such a problem?

Why are you bothering to install SP1?

Why are you bothering to install SP1?

When I first went to the Windows update page, SP1 and a bunch of security fixes were the only options available to me. It wasn't until after I had installed SP1 that SP4 showed up.

Thank you very much for the link! I can once more access my computer. I'm not sure what kind of hybrid of SP I have now (after reverting several files) but I'll chug along and see where it gets me.

Thanks again!

Don't use Windows Update for SP4, download it 1st, then install it:

Still got the same problem... Not sure where to go from here - I've spent enough time on this system to last me a while... I'm just trying to set up a second system that I can use for older games and a few other things. I question the time I've already spent on trying to get this thing going, so I think I'll just leave it at SP1, try and get some old version of reader to work with it, and leave it at that.

Thanks for all your help.

There's always SP2 or SP3. I took my old Win2K CD (with no SP's) & slipstreamed SP4 into it using nLite. Never had a problem with it.
