Dell PC won't boot from HD nor CD (Win 2000).

March 11, 2012 at 22:43:51
Specs: Windows 2000, Pentium II processor 256MB
System will not boot from HD nor CD but does power up and ask for password. when type in password, the system responded with usual grinding like noise which usually followed with window booting, but now it is just a black screen. When try to boot from CD, it again responded with the grinding noise but only displayed: type any key to start booting. When type a key, nothing happens. I have left the system idle and connected to Internet too long (System shows 23 hours when went into system set up to check. Can anyone suggest what is the problem? Dying HD? Virus? Or BIOS Issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The computer is quite old but the files on HD are important.

If it's not booting to the HDD, how are you getting a login prompt to enter your password?

The login frame always come up twice one before hardware boot ine before win 2000. I always felt strange but lived with it. Now after the first login, the screen turns black and win 2000 does not come up. Hope someone experienced this before and know the answer.

You might try getting your hands on a Setup (Boot) Disc. It is actually a set of 4 floppy discs. I have one I can send you.
