Windows 10 upgrade deleted all my MP3 files

October 9, 2015 at 14:04:17
Specs: Windows 7
When I did windows 10 upgrade it deleted all of my mp3 files on hard drive and external my book drive. So I thought I would recover them from my laptop witch I had also upgraded and all of the mp3 files are gone from the laptop also.

"external my book drive"
Do not have this connected until everything is finished.

Have you searched the drives for *.mp3 which should find all mp3s?

It is unusual for Windows to completely lose stuff so I wonder if they have been relocated somewhere else.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I looked and searched in windows old and there are no mp3's in it. I also tried to do a backup from Norton and it killed all of my backups. Norton says there are no backups available.

I went to Microsoft’s web site for windows 10 upgrade https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sof... installed the 64 bit tool and selected the install update now and followed the prompts to upgrade to windows 10. I upgraded my laptop the same way and I lost my mp3 files on the laptop also. Plus I had “my book” external drive with my backup files attached to the desktop and my backup mp3 files are gone from that also. I know I should have disconnected it from the desktop but it’s to late now. I also upgraded my table to windows 10 the same way but had my mp3’s on a card which I did remove before I upgraded the tablet.
After the upgrade I could not find my music files on the desktop so I did the following. I did a search by right clicking start…..file explorer..... in the search this pc box I typed *.mp3 and it found no files. Then I did a search by right clicking start…..file explorer.....double clicked C drive and in the search windows C box I typed *.mp3 and it found no files. I then did a search by right clicking start…..file explorer.....double clicking C drive and double clicking windows.old and looked for a music folder and was unable to find one so I did a search windows old for *.mp3 and it found no files. Then I did a search by right clicking start…..file explorer.....double clicked J drive “my book” external drive and in the search my book J box I typed *.mp3 and it found no files. I also did a C drive, this pc and windows.old search on my laptop and found no mp3 files.
I had already done the show hidden files, Folders, and drives in Windows 10. By opening file explorer view tab and checking hidden items, file name extensions and item check boxes. I also did the options to make sure everything was set correct and I had full view of everything.
Also sometimes when I boot up my keyboard on the deaktop is disabled and I have to unplug it from the usb port and then plug it back in to be able to logon to windows. Every time I do a restart this happens and I have to unplug and re-plug the keyboard. It only happens once in a while with a shutdown and clean boot.

This loss of mp3's is really odd. Goodness why it should select one file type out and lose it. It shouldn't have touched the contents of your backup drive either. I wonder if their file extensions have become lost or renamed. Do you know any of their file names? If so see if it finds any of the names, either from the Search area in startup or under the C drive heading.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I just tried searching by a music name and nothing was found. The funny thing is I had an audio book with the extension .mp3 and it did not delete that, it is like it deleted the contents of folders that had the word music in it's name. Music, music backup, music new were all emptied. Folder were still there but they were empty.

Not looking good for the MP3 recovery, lets fix this.

"Also sometimes when I boot up my keyboard on the deaktop is disabled and I have to unplug it from the usb port and then plug it back in to be able to logon to windows. Every time I do a restart this happens and I have to unplug and re-plug the keyboard."
