Windows 10 hung and frozen - hard restart

May 4, 2016 at 02:59:00
Specs: Windows 10
Hi - I bought a new PC a while ago and it was preinstalled with windows 10. I figured that sometimes when I left my computer on for a while, it freezes and nothing can be done unless I hard-reset it.

Annoyed with that, I googled the question and found some idea to look via event viewer. Initially there was some issue with the MB software, but now I download the new BIOS - the event viewer not showing that error. Problem is it was showing other error:

The Open Procedure for service "BITS" in DLL "C:\Windows\System32\bitsperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.

This error normally happened preceeding the frozen state - if I analyze the event viewer. Anyone can help please?

I don't know why your computer is freezing but I doubt it is due to BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) which is only likely to affect updating. It seems to be referring to its performance statistics rather than BITS itself.

We need the event error number but in the meantime see if anything here helps:
https://social.technet.microsoft.co...

See if there are any other event errors showing at exactly the same time.

Did the BIOS update stipulate it was to cure the freeze up error? Normally it is very rare to do BIOS updates which are only for things like changing the CPU.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

So - the story was I had this new PC but it kept freezing randomly. Looked at the event viewer and had an issue with some eventID - pinned it down that it was related to BIOS issue related to specific MB chipset. There, I was told to update BIOS. True enough, when I update the BIOS, that error from the eventID disappeared, but the freezing still happen albeit not as frequently. Then I found this error (EVENTID 1008) to appear prior the freezing occurred.

Any idea what I should do?

Hard to make too much sense of this but it seems like a Windows bug which doesn't normally affect things too much. In your case maybe turning off the performance counter might help.as the freeze up happens at the same time. The details are here:
http://freek.ws/2015/05/16/how-to-f...

You download the "Extensible Counter List" and follow the instructions given. I accept it is not a proper fix but it would be worth trying to see if the freezing stops. It is easy to undo again if you wish to.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
