Why wont my notebook reset

April 30, 2020 at 10:43:02
Specs: Windows 10
I have a Lenovo Yoga 300 -11IBR notebook. It was full of junk and it wouldn't do a windows update, so I decided to reset it. I started the reset PC option by pressing the NOVO button at the side and I have followed the on-screen prompts. Partway through it says it has encountered a problem and cant continue.

I have used DISM and SCAN NOW and neither suggests any issues with the PC. I'm not really PC savvy just what I pick up from "Googling".

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

First do a Disk Clean Up (Computer>right click on C drive, select Properties, Select Disk Clean Up, check all boxes (or most), OK, OK
Second install and run ADWCleaner (by Malwarebytes) https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/...
Remove all it finds.
Then install Malwarebytes free version and run it (Under set up include "Scan for Root Kits" check box) https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-do...
Remove all it finds.
Post back in separate replies the contents (copy/paste) of the logs of both the above programs.
Someone will review the contents and offer additional suggestions depending upon the results.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Well, you got rid of a LOT of pre-installed Lenovo crapware plus the Adware.pokki infection. Have you rebooted after running the scans?

If you don't already have it, install CCleaner Slim. Before you run a scan, look over the list on the left side. Check or uncheck whatever you what to keep or delete, then click Analyze. It may take a while for the 1st scan so be patient. When it's done, it will provide a list of all the garbage files on your computer & tell you how much space they use. You can then click Run Cleaner to remove them all. After doing that, click Registry & the Scan for Issues. Whatever is found is safe to delete. After doing that, click Tools > Startup. That will provide a list of everything that loads when you start your computer. If you're not sure what to keep or what to disable, click Save to Text file & then post the list.

I notice on the start up screen of CCleaner that as well as the list of programs listed under the Windows tab (see above) there are also a few other tabs called Scheduled Tasks; Context Menu; Windows Services. I guess these should be ignored as "rider" doesn't refer to these in their post? Thanks

OK so while I have been scanning and cleaning I noticed that windows had downloaded an update - something its not been able to do without throwing up an error for some time. But when I returned to the PC a short time after I noticed it was in the process of rolling back the update - AAAGGGHHH!!!

In desperation I tried to reset the PC again, after all it's been a while since I tried this (see original post) and I have removed a significant amount of junk from it, but sadly it's still throwing up an error message to say it can't complete the process.

So I appeal yet again to anyone that can help me reset this darn machine to it's factory setting.

Many thanks

I think that the majority of savvy windows users here prefer to manually install any /all updates; after notification that they're available. At the worst allow them to be downloaded - but "you" decide what and when to install.

I don't know about the last 2 items on your startup list but the rest seem to be legit. I did a search & TightVNC is for remote access, Wondershare Helper Compact is for video conversion. Who is remotely accessing what?

You understand that if you do a reset, you'll lose everything. The PC will return to the state it was in on the day it was purchased. If the reset fails, another option would to be to completely wipe the HDD & install Win10 from scratch. But this would mean you'd have to reinstall everything - drivers, software, Windows Updates, etc. You can download Win10 for free from Microsoft. It will activate using your Lenovo product key. Entering the key may not even be required.

Before you go too much further... is there anything on the drive which you wouldn’t wish to lose; i.e there is stuff you’d like to save/safeguard?

Hi riider, my wife used to use the PC at work and occasionally an IT specialist would remotely access it.

I would very much like to return the PC to the same state as the day it was purchased. Doing a clean wipe of the PC and a fresh Windows 10 install would be OK as long as Windows automatically loaded all the necessary drivers and software I needed.

Hi trvlr, there is nothing on the PC I need to save.

As a footnote, I do like the idea of the recovery software on the drive. It's a shame that Lenovo don't have a image of the drive in it's original supplied state.

Keep the thoughts and ideas coming :)

Those days of recovery partitions seem to be something now lost in the past I think.

I do recall that Acer (at least) used to advise making a set of recovery disks as soon as the new computer had been brought into use; i.e. the owner had done the required registrations etc..

Sadly not many did; nor I suspect still don't even today.

And these is a deal of sense in making an image of the system once you have it the way you like/want it; as then you can simply restore that should the need arise. And to update that image as time passes; create a second image and retain the first. Then later update the first to become a third and keep the second... and so on...

When I have had issues like Windows Update does not complete I have had very good success using Tweaking.com Windows Repair Tool:
https://www.tweaking.com/content/pa...
You install it then restart your computer in Safe Mode and run it. Run all of the prescan steps and anything it recommends. This takes a while but I have used it to fix Windows Update, Print Spooler that would not start, and a couple of other issues. If a system file was corrupted by an infection and still has issues after the infection is removed, it will find the corrupted file and replace it with the correct one.
It is certainly worth the time to do it in my opinion.

Later if all else fails or if you really want to start over you can first download the drivers from the manufactures web site and save them onto a flash drive and then download Windows 10 ISO Image. With the image you then burn a DVD or separate Flash Drive and when you boot to that you can start the install process, make sure that you delete all partitions so you have a completely clean install with none of the junk. Once it has completed you install all of your drives and then run Windows Update (it may take a while to complete).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
