Are you using the AC adapter that came with the laptop? Are you sure it's plugged into a working electrical outlet?

It seems that Dell have a lot of trouble with the power jack. Unfortunately if that is the trouble it is not easy to fix yourself.

If nobody comes up with a better idea consider returning it under the warranty.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

It is the original cord and a green light is on on the adapter. Yes I have checked the outet, it works. I have only had this for 2 months. Thank you answers like this have taught me what to check.

I called Dell and was told it definitely a Win 10 upgrade issue. I don't necessarily agree. I will call for warranty if I can not do this myself. Thanks for your help.

So you upgraded to Windows 10 from 8 and that's when the problem started? That seems odd.

My bet is on a bad power jack for the A/C adapter. The system will stay powered up, but will not charge the battery.

If you try and replace that or the MOBO yourself, you're going to void your warranty.

I would contact them again. If you have on-site service, get a tech to come to your home and replace the MOBO.

Are you telling us you are having TWO different issues? -

1) 'battery plugged in not charging ?

and

2) The AC power adaptor type cannot be determined

I called Dell because the first two suggestions didn't work. After 3 hours on the phone and remote assistence, I was told, "We are sending you a new power cord, AC adapter. If that does not fix the problem we will further help you." I was happy, this time contacting Dell I actually got a tech that liked and did her job. Anyway I would say there are two issues. Will see what happens.. Thank you all for your input.
