Right-clicking on File Explorer no longer opens drop-down me

October 17, 2019 at 14:12:08
Specs: Windows 10, 8 GB
Something's obviously changed. When I right-click on the File Explorer icon in the task bar, I expect to see a menu appear. That no longer happens. Also, when I left-click on the File Explorer icon, the system goes through the motions of opening File Explorer, but it never opens.
Does anyone know what has changed and how I can fix it?
Thanks

Simple things first. "Restart" your computer. Do not shut down and then start up again instead because on Windows 10 the Restart has a greater clearing function.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Sorry, Derek, Restarting my laptop did not solve the issue. Perhaps related, when I right-click once on the File Explorer icon in the task bar, Windows 10 goes through the motions, the screen blinks, but a drop-down menu never displays.

Possibly something very similar to restarting Windows might work.
Try restarting Windows Explorer.

If you get a menu when you right-click the taskbar, you can run
Task Manager, then in the list of Windows processes, right-click
on Windows Explorer, then either Restart it or End task, and it
will automatically restart.

Huh. In my Task Manager, the name of the process is "Windows Explorer",
even though the name of the program has changed to "File Explorer".

It could be an early (or late) sign of an infection. Run:
ADWCleaner by malwarebytes
Run Malwarebytes
Remove anything they find and copy/paste the logs in separate replies for review if anything was found.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Fingers,
I downloaded and ran the current version of ADWcleaner. The only stuff it trapped and quarantined were nuisance apps that were installed along with Windows 10. Issue remains unsolved.
