remove Anti Malware Service Executable

May 21, 2020 at 08:22:24
Specs: Windows 10, AMD A6 - 6GB
can I safely remove "Anti Malware Service Executable"? My PC is "busy" all the time and when I go to my Task Manager, it indicates the CPU is 80%-95% and the Power Usage is "Very High". I'm experiencing a very slow pc these days and thought removing the Antimalware Service could help. I use AVG for my antivirus and Windows firewall for protection.

"Anti Malware Service Executable" is Windows Defender. Quick Google search turned up numerous hits. I'm not a fan of AVG but Defender should have automatically been disabled after AVG was installed.

mmm - another windows issue...

Seems it's part of Defender and can't actually be removed; but can be disabled...

See if any of these links are of any help (have a look-see/read of all of theml):

And this one is from a site specific to antimalware...

As I understand it, adding in third party AV utility is "supposed" to disable Defender... But maybe not?

There are some here who find Defender all that's required - alongside something like Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner, and a regular run of ccleaner too.

Regardless - hang about for the pest removal gurus here (an elite group of which I'm not one) who may offer other measures and advice.

Microsoft Defender was not working. I've tried everything to get this operational but no luck. Even the most recent Defender update won't download. I finally gave up and tried to delete Defender but again, no luck so I decided to go back to AVG whom I never had a problem with my previous computers. I'll try some of your suggestions posted and will reply. Thanks for getting back to me. Just don't know why my "in use" light on my computer is constantly on.

You can only have one AV running/installed at a time, as riider said, once AVG was installed, it takes over.
I use Windows Defender & to get it working again, you have to use the AVG uninstaller.

I couldn't get Defender to work. That is why I downloaded AVG as I needed an antivirus. There is definitely a problem with Microsoft Defender. My original problem that I posted was well after Defender stopped working. I don't see where the original problem has to do with the Defender problem.

Do other win-10 downloads download OK?

If not then I think you may need to download the latest version the download manager/ updater for win-10?

My memory of windoze is that the updater occasionally has to be updated, and that unless it’s the current version installed then updates may not come down - for any windoze system (and other programme) files?

"I couldn't get Defender to work"
How do you know it wasn't working?
It doesn't display itself, it works silently in the background & only fires up, when I install a program it is not sure of.

When you right click on a file, do you get the option to scan with AVG, Windows Defender & any other?

trvir: No problem with any of the Windows updates....just Defender.

Johnw: I know Defender isn't working as I constantly get a popup indicating that my computer has no antivirus protection. (previous to me installing AVG) . When I right click on a file, it doesn't show any option to scan the file.

Will work through the other suggestions and advise.

If you were getting the potentially unprotected message or similar.

You may have removed the scan logs of Windows Defender with an optimizer, such as CCleaner. As a result, the Microsoft built-in antivirus thinks you have not performed a scan for long time and triggers that warning.

Can you upload to Imgur an SS ( screenshot ) of what right clicking a file offers you. Give us the link please.
