You can uninstall the printer and reinstall it. This often fixes unexplained problems that should not be occuring.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Surprisingly all printers are different. Please let us know the printer make and model number. Thx.

OK, I thought this site was only about the type of printer that I searched for. It is a Canon MX 490.

Derek may know the Canon printers better than I do but in general I check these places for this issue:
Open Devices and Printers and make sure that the correct printer is set to default. If not then right click in it and select Set as Default.
Right click on the printer icon and select Printer Preferences and see that there is not a check in a box marked 'Print to File'. Close.
Open a document and go to File>Print, before hitting OK look that the correct printer is selected and there is no check mark on the box 'Print to File' there. Hit Apply and OK to print it. (When making settings in Devices and Printers you are setting the overall preferences for the printer, here you are setting the preferences for that program (Word, etc.) that you printed from so recheck in another program to see if the settings are kept.
Let us know if these help as others will pop by with other suggestions soon.

Sorry, wasn't able to unearth much. Are you quite certain you are not set up for scanning rather than printing because there is a scan to pdf file option?

If you haven't a manual there is an online one here:

No, none of that works. I'll just throw the printer away and get another one.

OK. It MAY be a problem of wifi and it not connecting. If so, just plug your computer in to your printer using a usb and then try printing.

My printer is plugged into my computer. the thing I am trying to print is a coupon. It won't print from online and it won't print when I have it sent to myself as an email. If I save it to my computer it saves as a printer file and I have nothing that will open that kind of file. There is something weird about this printer anyway- I don't mean it is weird, I mean it has features that I've never dealt with before and really don't want to. It talks about being a cloud printer. I don't want to get into the whole cloud thing.

Seems very odd that a printer can't print online or emails without saving them to a file first (cloud or not).
Maybe it's faulty anyway.

To go any further we would need the file type (file extension) of this printer file so that we know what it is. For instance Picture.pdf (the extension being pdf). Sounds like you want to dump it though.

If you click on Print and go to the Print Properties, is the box checked to Print to File?
