Solved Is System Mechanic a fraud?

September 16, 2017 at 11:33:48
Specs: Windows 10
Since installing System Mechanic and running a couple analyses and recommended repairs, my PC and Internet are slower than ever. Also my gateway ip is missing. Emailed System Mechanic from their site, but email didn't seem to be working. Is this thing a fraud?

✔ Best Answer
It has a highly dubious reputation. And the people behind it have sought to suppress critcsisms about it; even to point of law suits against at least one well established and well repsected website.y

Whilst no doubt there are some who may have found it ok... many have not.

Many (but not all...) of these fix it packages create false alerts, create problems in a system that was generally ok... Usual advice is to avoid them like the plague; unless you can find indepenent, bona-fide reviews and recommendations for a given one.

I would uninstall it; then run a few cleaner apps to ensure you have gotten rid ot fully.

Check Derek's suggested cleaners here; all free, safe to use

Thanks so much. I thought of uninstalling it and I'm glad you suggested it. I'll check out Derek's suggested cleaners as well. Again, thanks so much.

Note that the downloaded files for both AdwCleaner and JRT go out of date very quickly so it is best to get a new copy before use. MalwareBytes itself updates whenever you do a scan.

[From what I've seen on this forum over the years, System Mechanic appears to have wrecked a few systems].

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thank you Derek (and trvlr). I downloaded AdwCleaner and JRT as they were from that website. I will update before I run them again. I don't want to say anything too optimistic at this point, but things are looking (knock on wood) good! Thanks again, guys!

If you want a really good all-round cleaner then try Privazer. Its a free programme but you can get the "Donors Version for as little as a donation of $10.00 You can donate as much or as little as you want.

Wilders security forums have a page here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr... in which various users relate their experiences. You can also download it here: http://download.cnet.com/PrivaZer/3...

... and it does speed up your machine considerably!

Thank you, Ewen. At this point, I'm reluctant to download anything. My initial optimism has faded as my PC is still freezing and running very slow, both offline and online, this despite running the 3 cleaners recommended by Derek. I have a warranty, so I guess I'll take it to the Geek Squad to see if they can figure out what's going on. I appreciate all the help. All you guys are great!

Ensure any important personal data is safely duplicated elsewhere - off the system as is - before you let the geek squad etc. have a look-see at what ails. Never wise to let anyone have a go at fixing problems without one has first safeguarded personal data. At least copy to DVD; and if possible to an external hard drive too; and verify the copies are accessible/ok too before further intervention.

Thanks trvlr. I have an external hard drive, which I use as back up.
